2026 Giving Update: Simple Ways Your Support Can Stretch Further

posted by Nicole Ericson on Tuesday, February 24, 2026

As we welcome 2026, several Internal Revenue Service (IRS) updates may influence how people choose to give. These changes can provide new opportunities to support organizations like Exceptional Persons, Inc. (EPI), and ultimately strengthen services for adults with diverse abilities in our community.

While EPI does not provide tax advice, we wanted to share a few quick highlights for educational purposes only:

  1. A New Benefit for Donors who Don't Itemize
In 2026, people taking the standard deduction can still deduct up to $1,000 in cash gifts (or $2,000 for couples) to qualified charities. Why it Matters: Even small donations to EPI may now offer a little tax benefit.

  2. For Supporters Age 70½ and Older: IRA Giving Just Became Even More Powerful
If you give from your Individual Retirement Arrangement (IRA) using a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), you can donate up to $111,000 in 2026, and it may reduce taxable income. Why it Matters: If you’re already taking required distributions, a QCD can help you and help EPI.

  3. Itemizing Your Deductions? There Are New Rules
Starting in 2026, only charitable giving above 0.5% of your income is deductible. Why it Matters: Larger gifts may offer more tax benefits than smaller ones.

How this Helps EPI
No matter how you choose to give, your support strengthens services for the people we serve, helping them to live, work, and grow right here in our community.
