Connecting People & Creating Memories

This summer, EPI gathered at Black Hawk Park in Cedar Falls for an event we called “Fun in the Sun BBQ”. It was an afternoon filled with sunshine, good food, and even better company. Though the event turned out to be more than just a picnic; it was a true reflection of our mission – connecting people, creating opportunities, and nurturing growth.
The day had all the makings of summer fun: friendly beanbag toss competitions, the smell of grilled favorites drifting across the park, and a potluck table overflowing with delicious side dishes – all prepared by staff and/or by the people we serve. Board members, staff, and friends came together, creating the feeling of one big family. Whether you were catching up under the shade of the pavilion, sharing a favorite recipe, or laughing over a yard game, the sense of community was everywhere.
One person served captured the spirit of the day best as he left: “I might look like I'm leaving early, but I was so excited for this event that me and Denis were the very first people to show up!” That excitement, paired with the joy we saw on so many faces, reminds us how important these moments of connection truly are.
At EPI, we know that growth happens not only in workplaces or structured programs, but also in simple moments of belonging – sharing a favorite recipe and a meal, joining a game, or feeling welcomed as part of a larger community. Gatherings like this show the power of what we can accomplish when we come together to celebrate one another.
To everyone who joined us – staff, persons served, and board members – thank you for making this day a success. It’s events like these that remind us working at EPI is more than a job; it’s being part of a family that values laughter, connection, and shared experiences.
