Technology, Innovation, and Human Connection

posted by Bonnie Kipper on Friday, November 6, 2026

Technology has transformed the way we communicate, work, learn, and access support. In human services, emerging technologies are creating new opportunities to help people live more independently while remaining connected to the services and relationships that matter most.

At EPI, we've seen firsthand how technology can expand opportunities for the people we support. Through tools like our Virtual Connection Center (VCC), remote support services, virtual coaching, and telehealth options, individuals are gaining greater flexibility, independence, and control over their daily lives. For some, that may mean receiving support in their own home rather than moving into a more restrictive setting. For others, it means accessing guidance, check-in appointments, or assistance when it is needed while continuing to go about their day.

As technology continues to evolve, there is growing interest in new tools such as artificial intelligence (AI). While these innovations hold exciting possibilities, we believe technology should always serve people, not replace them.

At EPI, our approach is guided by the same principles that shape all of our services: person-centered supports, fairness, accuracy, privacy, and human judgment. Technology can help improve efficiency, strengthen communication, and expand access to support, but meaningful decisions still require professional expertise, personal relationships, and an understanding of each individual's unique needs.

Whether we're exploring emerging technologies, utilizing telehealth resources, or expanding remote supports, we evaluate every advancement through a simple lens:

Does it help people live, work, and grow more independently while remaining connected to the support they need?

As we look toward the future, EPI remains committed to exploring innovative solutions while staying grounded in the values that have guided us since 1957.

Because while technology will continue to evolve, our mission remains the same: connecting people, creating opportunities, and nurturing growth.
