Opportunities Without Walls

posted on Monday, November 2, 2026

For decades, disability services often happened within the walls of a building. Schedules were structured. Activities were predetermined. Opportunities to engage with the broader community were often limited.

Today, we're working toward something different. At EPI, our My Life, My Way service enhancement is built on a simple belief: meaningful lives are built in the community, not around it.

That's why we often think of My Life, My Way as a service enhancement that creates opportunities without walls.

Instead of following predetermined schedules, individuals are supported in exploring interests, building relationships, volunteering, participating in faith communities, attending local events, and discovering new opportunities throughout the community. The result is a more personalized experience built around each person's goals, interests, and routines.

What happens next is often remarkable. As people become active participants in their communities, confidence grows. Relationships develop. Familiar places become welcoming spaces. Individuals begin to see themselves not as visitors, but as valued members of the community.

Those experiences can also open doors to other opportunities, including employment. Through volunteering, community involvement, and social activities, individuals build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and gain experience interacting with others. These same skills often help people feel more prepared to pursue employment goals and explore new possibilities for their future.

Of course, success isn't measured only by employment outcomes. Sometimes success is finding a church community, developing a new friendship, becoming a trusted volunteer, or simply gaining the confidence to try something new.

That's the heart of My Life, My Way. It's about creating opportunities for people to build connections, contribute their talents, and shape lives that reflect their own goals and interests.

Because true inclusion happens when people are welcomed, valued, and given opportunities to participate fully in the communities they call home.
