Recently, EPI was invited by Iowa Health and Human Services (HHS) to present at the Enabling Technology Town Hall. This event brought together providers from across the state to share how technology is transforming Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS)—and we were honored to tell our story.
Our Two-Year Journey with Tech-Enabled Services
For the past two years, EPI has been integrating smart technology into homes and leveraging our Virtual Connection Center to provide remote support.
Alongside this, we’ve expanded a separate telehealth service, delivering traditional supports virtually through tablets and smartphones. These innovations ensure the people we support receive the care they need—wherever they are and whenever they may need it.
During the town hall, we shared:
- How we started: Building a foundation for tech-enabled and telehealth services.
- Where we are now: A thriving model that combines smart home technology and virtual support.
- What we’ve learned: Technology is not just a tool—it’s a pathway to independence.
Celebrating Real Impact
The results speak for themselves:
- Six individuals have successfully transitioned from daily supports to intermittent services thanks to telehealth.
- One daily supported community living site saw staff consistency jump from 49% to 92%—a direct result of our Virtual Connection Center.
- Telehealth is expanding our reach by allowing us to deliver services regardless of location or weather, with minimal wait times.
These outcomes demonstrate how technology can empower people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live more independently while ensuring our talented workforce is where they are needed most.
Looking Ahead
We’re grateful to Iowa HHS for inviting us to share our experience and to collaborate with other providers committed to innovation. Together, we’re shaping the future of services—one smart solution at a time.
