Celebrating the Heart of DSP Recognition Week

posted on Friday, September 5, 2025

“We're like one big happy family. I really appreciate the staff.” — Margaret, a person supported through DSP services

Margaret’s words capture the heart of what Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) do every day—they create connection, community, and care. They are mentors, advocates, coaches, cheerleaders—and often do feel like family.

That’s why, during DSP Recognition Week (September 7–13), we pause to honor these incredible professionals who show up with compassion, patience, and purpose. Their work is essential, and their impact is immeasurable.

How We’re Celebrating This Year
We’re turning up the appreciation with a week full of gratitude and good vibes:

  • Grab & Go Breakfasts – Twice during the week, we’re treating our DSPs to a morning pick-me-up to start their day with a smile.
  • Ice Cream Truck Social Hour – Because nothing says “thank you” like a sweet treat and time to connect with coworkers and friends.

These are small gestures for a big impact. But the most meaningful recognition comes from raising awareness and building lasting support for this essential profession.

How You Can Help
DSPs are the backbone of disability services, yet their profession often goes unrecognized. This week is about more than celebration—it’s about shining a light on their role and advocating for the support, pay, and recognition they deserve.

Here’s how you can join us:

  • Share their stories. Post a message of thanks or share a story about a DSP who’s made a difference in your life. Use hashtags like #DSPRW25 and #WeAreEPI to spread the word.
  • Send a thank you. A quick message—via email, text, or handwritten note—can mean the world.
  • Advocate. Sign up for our newsletter to stay informed on how you can support policy changes that uplift DSPs.
  • Give in their honor. Want to make a lasting impact? Make a donation to support our mission and honor the DSPs who give so much of themselves every day.

As Margaret shared, DSPs often feel like family—because they are. However you choose to celebrate this week, know that your support helps shine a light on a profession that deserves recognition not just during DSP Recognition Week, but all year long.
