Much of Iowa is currently under a heat advisory, with temperatures soaring into the mid-90s and heat index values reaching up to 106°F in some areas. The National Weather Service urges everyone—especially individuals with disabilities and those who support them—to take extra precautions during this dangerous heat wave.
At EPI, we know how critical it is to protect the health and safety of our community. People with disabilities may be more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses due to medications, mobility challenges, or difficulty regulating body temperature. That’s why we’re not only sharing key safety tips—but also reminding everyone about the Virtual Connection Center (VCC), available to anyone receiving our tech-enabled services. The VCC is a valuable resource to help individuals stay connected, supported, and informed—from the comfort of their home, even during the hottest of days.
Here are a few heat safety tips we're telling our staff and persons served:
1. Stay Hydrated
- Drink water frequently—even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Avoid sugary, caffeinated, or alcoholic drinks.
- Watch for signs of dehydration like dry mouth, dizziness, or dark urine.
2. Keep Cool
- Stay in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible.
- Use fans, cool showers, or damp cloths to lower body temperature.
- Wear lightweight, breathable clothing in light colors.
3. Limit Outdoor Activity
- Avoid being outside during peak heat hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
- If you must go out, take frequent breaks in the shade and drink water every 20 minutes.
- Use sunscreen and wear a hat and sunglasses.
4. Know the Signs of Heat Illness
- Heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, dizziness.
- Heat stroke (a medical emergency): confusion, rapid pulse, high body temp, fainting. Call 911 immediately.
5. Check In and Stay Connected
- Check on neighbors, friends, and loved ones—especially those who live alone or have limited mobility.
- Make sure emergency plans are in place and that everyone knows the signs of heat illnesses.
- If you or someone you love receives tech-enabled services through EPI, the Virtual Connection Center is available as an added layer of support. Whether it’s checking in, sharing symptoms, or just needing someone to talk to—we’re here. Reach out through your device to stay connected when it matters most.
