Building Confidence with Everyday Moments

When you walk into a tech-enabled home, you might not even notice the life-changing technology quietly at work. These discreet yet powerful home enhancements are designed not to stand out—but to remain on standby. For many people who choose to use them, these small tools represent something much bigger: confidence, connection, and a chance to grow.
At Exceptional Persons, Inc. (EPI), we're seeing how thoughtful use of technology can do so much more than improve safety. These services are helping people at EPI not only stay safe in their homes—but also build independence, develop life skills, and make meaningful choices every day.
Just ask Mannal.
“I’ve come a long way,” she shared. “I’ve made some progress, and they’ve helped me express myself in a constructive way.”
That kind of growth is possible because of the safety net in place. Mannal knows that if she ever needs help, someone will be there—yet the real impact is in how her confidence grows in the everyday moments.
“I want to learn how to cook on my own one day. It’d be an honor to do that,” she said. "They teach me little things I can learn every day.”
For Mannal, and so many others, those “little things” add up—measuring coffee just the way she likes it, practicing new recipes, learning how to ask for help when needed. They’re more than tasks; they’re stepping stones toward independence.
And it’s clear that the care goes both ways. “They do care. You can sense it,” Mannal said. “I really care about staff, and I think they care about us.”
As Bonnie, a Direct Support Professional (DSP), put it, "people know there’s extra protection built in. If someone feels lonesome, she can push the button and ask the question. It gives them freedom, and peace of mind.”
And it’s not just the people supported who are growing. The team at EPI is learning alongside them—adapting and adjusting as new tools become available.
Colin, once a DSP now a Virtual Connection Specialist, sees it as a chance to meet people where they are.
“It allows us to provide the remote supervision and support,” he said. “If an emergency comes up, we’re able to quickly respond… and do most of that virtually.”
It’s all part of a shift toward more person-centered care—where supports are designed around individual preferences, rhythms, and goals.
The truth is, life isn’t built only in big moments or emergencies that may come up. It’s in the in-between: the daily routines, the quiet mornings filling a cup of coffee, and the little victories that may go unnoticed. With the right tools and a caring team, those moments can become empowering.
Or, as Mannal encourages others: “I encourage people to give it a try!"
Our newest video shares real stories and voices from those living—and growing—with tech-enabled services.
