Respiratory Illness Levels are High in Iowa

posted on Monday, January 5, 2026

As of January 5, 2026, the CDC reports that the United States is experiencing very high levels of acute respiratory illness, marking the first time this season activity has reached this level. In Iowa, activity is currently high.

Many of the people EPI supports are considered a vulnerable population when it comes to respiratory illnesses, which is why we’re sharing this information with our staff and now with our followers.

Overall Respiratory Illness Activity

  • High levels of respiratory illnesses are causing a significant number of people to seek healthcare.
  • Seasonal influenza activity is elevated and continues to increase nationwide.
  • RSV activity is elevated in many areas, with emergency department visits and hospitalizations increasing among children ages 0–4.
  • COVID-19 activity remains low but is increasing nationally.

Seasonal Outlook
The CDC expects peak hospitalizations from COVID-19, influenza, and RSV to be similar or lower than last year, but still much higher than pre-COVID-19 levels.
