Our Beginnings
The beginning was fairly simple...
Families
were seeking better opportunities for their children with disabilities.
In the 1950's there were very few services
for people with disabilities, only activities that families could provide
or individual organizations working with people who had a specific type
of "handicap." Several local leaders were determined to have activity
centers within the community for people with "handicaps." There was
no one entity to coordinate this community effort. EPI was created to facilitate
and coordinate the development of local activity centers, and as it turns
out, a variety of other services, programs, organizations and agencies.
Before services could be developed, agreements were put into place to clarify
how services would be funded. With EPI coordinating the effort, soon there
were seven activity centers in the community.
"In 1957 Exceptional Persons, Inc.
was created by a few visionary people with a 'can do' attitude and a determination
to make the community a better place for everyone." -William E. Brown, Executive
Director, 1957-1983
The commitment, values, and ideas of many
community leaders decades ago melded an organization that continues to be
a moving force in the twenty-first century. The community effort was characterized
by committed people with a sense of partnership and foundational values
that have stood the test of time.
Celebrating 50
Years of
Exemplary
Services
1957-2007
EPI's history has always involved working
in partnership and collaborating with other agencies. EPI was formed to
provide program planning, to coordinate services and to advocate for individuals
with disabilities. Today, as in the past, the organization is a strong and
willing partner with a clear mission and values that guide decisions.
There were so many people who have been
instrumental in helping that organization achieve success. The organization
recognizes their contribution and is forever in their debt. Because of them,
Exceptional Persons, Inc. can truly celebrate 50 years of exemplary services!
